Tight Jeans - Casual Comedy

Tight Jeans gains strength with its simplistic style both technically and in terms of narrative, its downfall however arises on its dependence on the subject matter.


Essentially, this short is just three regular teenagers sat on a wall chatting rubbish whilst they wait for a mate in an apartment nearby. The simplistic camerawork, editing and audio match the realistic tone of the film, creating an instant sense of relatability between the characters and audience. However, my personal issues with the film arise out of focus on performance.


As the characters are talking about how and why their penises are too big to fit inside tight jeans for the large majority of this short, it quickly becomes boring and somewhat predictable. Personally, I find comedy more appealing when it uses techniques such as subversion or contradiction. For example, I believe that this short could be funnier if there is one main character who has to listen to his mate 'chat shit,' and completely disagrees with his theory about how white people became jealous of black penis sizes being the reason for slavery, as most people would, but as the short goes on every person agrees with the theory creating an amusing contradiction. Another perspective could be that a black man walks past in tight jeans towards the end, and the middle character begins to make excuses and inevitably chat more shit.


Although I appreciate the simplicity and relatability of this short film, I don't think I would personally do something similar, or at least not a similar subject matter. I can see how an idea like this could be very successful, for example The Ellington Kid.
