CW Brief Response

The term short film, for me, is a difficult one to define. This is due to the fact that short films share various similarities with other mediums such as music videos, therefore the definition must be a concrete one that isolates short films specifically from these other art forms. So, a definition such as;  "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits," can be misleading as it can apply to a music video. My definition of a short film is, therefore "an original motion picture that is no longer than 40 minutes, and serves no promotional purposes."

Our brief only demands 5-10 minutes of actual footage, so I can the imagine the difficulty arising in adapting a pre-written screenplay into a motion picture of the stated duration. I believe that because of this, careful planning and storyboarding will be required to ensure that the editing process can be efficient and simple. No matter what genre, style and themes the screenplay is based on, I want the short film to look professional, of a high quality and visually entertaining. I am also particularly interested in the music, but I will have to wait and see as the importance of soundtrack, underscore etc. will be determined by the amount of dialogue and storyline.
